In five years, Dutch curators Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings have taken what was an inspired idea into a hugely successful design event with over 600 designers showing across nineteen venues in the former industrial district of Lambrate in the north-east of Milan.

As a replacement for the now highly commercial approach of Superstudio and the rest of Tortona, Lambrate is geared almost entirely for inventive new design with design schools, young studios, and recent graduates making up the bulk of those showing. The whole event is vetted and curated by Vollenberg and Konings ensuring the quality level is kept extremely high. Whilst a few established brands form part of the offering each year, these tend to be companies that have a conceptual approach to their products or who have come from a background that makes them relevant to Lambrate’s alternative audience – Jaime Hayon has shown there in the last few years along with Lee Broom, Established & Sons, Lensvelt and De Vorm.
